Prompt Design Strategies

Production prompt design is a test-driven system discipline. A useful prompt contract states the objective, operating instructions, context, constraints, examples, output schema and safeguards, then measures task outcomes on representative data [src-264][src-265].

Practical pattern

1. Define the task and measurable outcome.

2. Supply only relevant context and explicit constraints.

3. Use labelled sections, delimiters and machine-readable output formats.

4. Add few-shot examples for nuanced behaviour or formatting.

5. Test ambiguity, conflicts, edge cases, missing data and prompt injection.

6. Compare prompt versions with stable datasets and metrics.

7. Re-test when the model, tools or runtime changes.

Explicit reasoning instructions are not automatically beneficial for models with native Thinking modes; compare approaches empirically [src-264].
