European AI Office
The European AI Office is the EU-level AI governance body referenced in the EU AI Act, especially for general-purpose AI model supervision, codes of practice, templates, guidance, and coordination.
Key facts
- Type: EU AI governance body
- Act role: Supports and supervises implementation of parts of the EU AI Act, especially general-purpose AI model obligations and systemic-risk model oversight [src-085].
- Operational hooks: Codes of practice, AI literacy support, fundamental-rights impact-assessment templates, regulatory sandboxes, and oversight of general-purpose AI models [src-085].
What it does
The Act gives the AI Office a central role in general-purpose AI governance. GPAI model providers must provide technical documentation to the AI Office and national competent authorities on request, publish training-content summaries using an AI Office template, and cooperate with EU and national authorities [src-085].
For systemic-risk GPAI models, the AI Office is part of the oversight loop for model evaluation, adversarial testing, systemic-risk mitigation, incident reporting, and cybersecurity expectations. The Act also links the AI Office to codes of practice, AI regulatory sandboxes, AI literacy tools, and templates for fundamental-rights impact assessment [src-085].
